2026 San Diego County Fair: Design in Wood exhibit

San Diego County Fair, Design in Wood exhibit, is a yearly display of the art of woodworking. Organized and put together by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, June 10th – July 5th, in Del Mar, California. All types of wood creations are on display: custom furniture, musical instruments, intarsia, marquetry, model building, wood carving, etc. The California Carvers Guild has had a booth here every year and has used CCG judging for carvings for many years. This is a gallery of just the carvings and CCG members involved.

Hi, I started carving in 2013 and enjoy whittling and chip carving. I joined the Santa Clara Valley Carvers club (Chapter 1) in 2014. Visit my website, READ N TRY, to see more of my woodcarving projects and explore chip carving patterns that I designed over the years.

This chip carved coaster set is a conversation-starting project that is quick to carve and can be personalized by adding themed decorations in the middle.

    Small hearts whittled from basswood.

Carving a stylized heart is an easy whittling project and can be done with just a knife using off-cuts from larger projects. I often paint them red or pink and give them away on Valentine’s Day.

A serving board with a combination of traditional and a free-style chip carving. It design features a small tree growing under the sun.

The image is not in portrait orientation, so it requires a lot of text to fill in that empty space.

    Thanks for reviewing my gallery!

    Happy carving,
    Roman
