The Log, September-October 2026

A Publication of the California Carvers Guild: Volume 42, No. 5, September – October 2026.

From the President

Hello all – If you are reading this message chances are you have found The LOG on our new website. Enjoy and be sure to explore the entire website.

My vision for the CCG website is to provide tools all Chapters can utilizes to share Chapter information as well as stimulate interest in the craft of woodcarving with the public.

CCG’s new website https://cacarversguild.org is a work in process, our website team has been working hard to implement many improvements including but not limited to:

  • Public facing LOG: After a great deal of discussion and membership outreach. A decision was made to make the LOG available to anyone who visits the website. Our goal is to increase website traffic while stimulating public visibility for the CCG beyond just our membership.
  • With our new website, Chapters have a dedicated forum to highlight “their” Chapter information and activities. Calendar events and activities should be utilized to share and grow the public’s knowledge of your Chapter, wood carving, and events where the public can see and speak to carvers “carving”.
  • Steps to automate the membership process have begun. Our new process allows new members to populate a form which then is automatically emailed to CCG membership.
  • Efforts are ongoing to update CCG contact information. See the link on the “Resources Tab” which allows members to update their contact information.
  • Certificate of Insurance applications have also been streamlined. After discussions between CCG and our insurance representative it became clear the procedure for requesting a certificate was an issue others faced also. Hub International took it upon themselves to simplify this process. CCG now has access to a dedicated team who handle this activity. Our website has in turn simplified the application process internally. The application information is filled out and once submitted the website generates and emails the document.

Excitement is the best way to describe these improvements. Utilize the new website to share your love for the art of woodcarving. Take some time to review all the tabs across the top; feel free to use the contact CCG link to share any insights with our team.

Happy carving! Dave Woulf

September is here, and it’s the perfect time to get your chisels ready for the spooky season! We are inspired by these festive pieces from Gerry Jensen (Chapter 5) and Roman Chernikov (Chapter 1), featuring a vibrant “Boo” sign and some charming basswood ghosts. With a few weeks to go, you still have plenty of time to carve something hauntingly beautiful for your family and friends. What are you carving for Halloween this season? Let us know in the comments below.

Love, love, love, everything I’m reading, the changes, and what will be easy to access! Great job to everyone involved!

The Channel Islands Carvers are doing a Halloween trick or treating character challenge with a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 4 inch block of Basswood. I’m carving the Purple People Eater. Which I learned not everyone knows, or the song. So I started singing the song… “one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater!” Those who knew it then said “thanks, I can’t get that out of my head now!”
